Does anyone know if RA causes or makes snoring worse? I have become a snorer in the last couple of years. Diagnosed with RA in 2005. I was a smoker but gave up in April 2008 I have put weight on since stopping smokin which my GP believes is the cause of my snoring. ALthough i did snore whilst smoking. My GP suggested losing weight and no alcohol but i don't drink. I suspect sleep apnea as i am always tired and can fall asleep at the drop of a hat. I had assumed it was due to fatigue in RA. Any advice would be welcome. Just come back from a holiday with hubby in Cyprus who i drove mad with my snoring. He sleeps in another room at home. Thanks Chris

Hello Chris
I am not sure if RA causes snoring. My husband says i do snore (but i don't beleive him) .
I am always tired and I blame RA, although sometimes it is my stupid fault for doing too much.
Perhaps someone else may be able to help

Same here but never connected it to RA- I think sometimes it's just too easy for gp's to say-'Oh it's the RA 'instead of investigating further. YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Buy Hubby some ear plugs!
Seriously though, I don't know of any RA link, but ....... quite a few years ago, I started snoring terribly, and went to see a specilist, who diagnosed a deviated Spetum. I pointed out that I had had that since birth, so why was it an issue now? His answer was (with a smile on his face) that most things start drooping once you pass a certain age.
I did have a nose operation (I was covered by work insurance back them) which was uncomfortable, but nothing changed, I was still snoring.

Chris I know about snoring very well in my house. My Husband could wake the dead. Never heard of it linked to RA but definitely if you are overweight. My Husband's snoring gets worse the bigger he is. If you suspect you are suffering from sleep aponea then you should have it investigated. It can be very damaging to your health, particularly your heart. As RA is linked to heart disease this would be a double whammy. As for sleeping in a separate room, I have been doing this for the last ten years and it does not mean that we do not love each other and cannot do naughty things when we want. I get a decent nights sleep (RA permitting) and I quite enjoy having all the bed to myself and controlling the temperature in the room without having to worry about someone else. I can also read a book until the wee small hours without someone shouting at me to "turn that light out" Take care Jackie xx

Hi Chris According to an article by "KW Drossaers-Bakker - 1998" Sleep Apnoea can be caused by RA due to the compression of the cervical spine and the inflammatory processes. Here is the link to the article. It's a difficult one because of the severity of fatigue in people with RA however I think I might be inclined to speak to a GP again. As Julie says often all symptoms are "blamed on RA" without further consideration. I went to Cyprus in the summer, stayed in Latchi on the north west coast and loved the area. Where did you stay? Welcome to the forum Chris, Lyn x

my late husband could wake the dead with his snoring he was overweight and diabetic type 1,i learned to sleep through the noise over 30 years, but when i got ra i had bother myself to sleep and it seemed he was so loud,he did infact have sleep apnea and attended various hospitals for overnight stays and to get a cpap machine, now thats a nifty piece of machinery you sleep with darth vader heavey breathing in your ear all night but i found it soothing as i didnt have to be on the alert to nudge him when he stopped breathing so i in turn got a bit more sleep, you need to get it checked out as righlty advised it puts strain on the heart etc,i dont snore im on mtx and sadly overweight but i do have a memory pillow i find very good,i use for sleeping and i put it at my back when i have to sit for long periods like typing, good luck.

I have never heard of this all the years I have had RA. (and I don't snore)
My hubby has sleep apnea (a little) and it is definitely from over weight/smoking.
Love,
Amanda
